LACMA
As an intern at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, I had the opportunity to collaborate with artists, curators, and educators to advance inclusive programming and visitor engagement initiatives. Over 10 weeks, I developed comprehensive solutions to enhance accessibility, wayfinding, and user experience across LACMA's diverse programming offerings.
My contributions include designing programming materials for 1000+ museum guests, coordinating event logistics and ASL interpretation, and developing a UI mockup for an integrated ticketing system that streamlines accessibility accommodation requests. Additionally, I led a research initiative examining museum accessibility across eight Los Angeles arts institutions to identify potential areas of growth for public programs at LACMA.

CASE STUDY
MUSEUM ACCESSIBILITY IN LOS ANGELES
For my internship capstone project, I led a research initiative on museum accessibility across 8 arts institutions in Los Angeles. By performing competitive analysis on ticket prices, accessibility-centered programming, and upon-request versus readily available accommodations, I identified potential areas of growth for public programs at LACMA.

PROBLEM DEFINITION
How can we increase access to public programs?

RESEARCH INSIGHTS
I analyzed 86 public programs across 8 arts institutions in Los Angeles, looking at museum entry fees (adult, non-member), program ticket fees (adult, non-member), programming areas, and accessibility accommodations.
My research encompassed contemporary and encyclopedic museums, virtual and in-person programs, and a range of program types (tours, workshops, lectures, performances, etc.).

The biggest gaps I found were in accessibility accommodations. Users could only request accessibility accommodations several weeks in advance through phone or email, creating unnecessary friction. While accessibility-focused programming was readily available at a few institutions, this only applied to tours and couldn't address the issue of user-specific accommodations.
Because accommodations are generalized rather than tailored to individual needs, users often don’t know what to expect or what to ask for. This lack of clarity can discourage participation and leave users feeling excluded from public programs.

NARROWING THE PROBLEM
How can we reduce the effort required for users to request accessibility accommodations for public programs?

DESIGN GOAL
We want to create an intuitive, transparent, and inclusive process that makes accessibility accommodations easy to request and understand for all users.

SOLUTION PROTOTYPE
I developed a solution by integrating accommodation requests into program ticketing—a process that all users already go through to RSVP for public programs.
To address my insights, I thought about ways to avoid increasing the user effort already required to attend programs. I wanted to adapt an existing system to incorporate my research.
By doing so, we can minimize additional user effort while providing clear descriptions of what users might experience. The design features an open-ended text box that guides users with accommodation options while allowing them to customize their requests.

REFLECTION
Narrowing down a manageable problem and designing a feasible solution within the limited timeframe of my internship was both challenging and rewarding. Accessibility is a broad and systemic issue, and it took time to identify a focused entry point that I could meaningfully impact. Through this project, I learned how to apply UX practices beyond traditional tech products, using design thinking to address a human-centered problem that happened to have a technology-based solution.

ARTISTS TAKE ON L.A.: ED RUSCHA, JUDY BACA, AND VINCENT VALDEZ
I designed the program for "Artists Take on L.A.," a film screening and panel discussion featuring renowned artists Ed Ruscha, Judy Baca, and Vincent Valdez. Working within LACMA's established design system, I created a cohesive layout that seamlessly integrated event details and comprehensive artist biographies. The design prominently features one of Ruscha's works from ED RUSCHA / NOW THEN—a piece depicting LACMA engulfed in flames—chosen to reinforce the evening's central theme of artistic identity and practice within Los Angeles.

I also coordinated with Pro Bono ASL to provide live American Sign Language interpretation throughout the program. This program drew our largest audience of the season, with approximately 900 attendees.

SUNSET BOULEVARD BUS TOUR WITH JOSH KUN
Another signature program for the ED RUSCHA / NOW THEN exhibition was the Sunset Boulevard Bus Tour, a sonic journey through Los Angeles led by cultural historian Josh Kun in collaboration with the Getty Research Institute. This innovative program transformed Ruscha's iconic photocollage Every Building on the Sunset Strip into an interactive, immersive exploration of LA's rich musical heritage, allowing participants to experience the Strip's cultural evolution firsthand.
Recognizing the tour bus's limited capacity, we expanded access by developing a companion audio tour with an embedded playlist, enabling Angelenos to take this experience into their own vehicles. To enhance this self-guided experience, I designed an accompanying tour guide that mapped the program's key stops while also highlighting additional bonus locations along the Sunset Strip.
